7th Central Texas African American Family Support Conference

"Transforming Healthier Communities: Mind, Body & Soul"

The Central Texas African American Family Support Conference was held February 9-10, 2007, at the Omni Austin Hotel at Southpark in Austin, Texas. The conference, hosted by Austin Travis County Mental Health Mental Retardation Center and sponsored with community partners continues to provide information and education to consumers, families, service providers, and the community about mental health, mental retardation/developmental disabilities, chemical dependence, and co-occurring disorders. Behavioral health, physical health, and spirituality tracks are integrated.

Highly respected and well-known experts in the field, such as Dr. M. Joycelyn Elders, Rev. Michael Livingston, and author Julia A. Boyd were this year's keynote presenters. The event had the participation of 538 individuals and numerous organizations.

This conference targets the African American community, but embraces all members of the community, regardless of race or ethnicity, and conference participation at all levels has been across racial and ethnic lines.
